Enrolling your child in NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) is simpler than most parents think — you don’t need a school, tuition centre, or any special permission to start. The entire NIOS enrollment process happens online through their student portal, takes about 15–20 minutes to complete, and costs between ₹3,000–₹12,000 depending on the grade and number of subjects you choose. Here’s exactly how to do it, step by step, based on our experience helping hundreds of homeschooling families through this process.

What is NIOS and Who Can Enroll?

Upper age restriction

NIOS is India’s government-run open schooling board designed specifically for learners who need flexibility — including homeschoolers, working teens, children with special needs, and those who left traditional school. Any child who is at least 14 years old can enroll in NIOS Secondary (Class 10), and any child who has passed Class 10 from any recognised board can enroll in NIOS Senior Secondary (Class 12). There’s no age limit, no interview, and no entrance test. You also don’t need to be enrolled in any physical school or coaching centre to register with NIOS.

Before You Start: What You’ll Need

Before beginning the NIOS registration process, gather these documents and details. You’ll need a scanned copy of your child’s birth certificate or Class 10 marksheet (for Class 12 enrollment), a recent passport-size photograph in JPG format, your Aadhaar card or any government ID for address proof, and a working email address and mobile number. Keep a debit card, credit card, or net banking ready for the registration fee payment. Having everything ready before you start makes the NIOS admission process much smoother.

Essential documents for NIOS admission
  • Photograph & Signature — recent passport-size colour photograph and signature (preferably in black ink).
  • Valid Identity Proof — Aadhaar Card (preferred), Passport, Ration Card, or other government-issued ID.
  • Date of Birth Proof — Birth Certificate, Aadhaar card with DOB, or Transfer Certificate / School Leaving Certificate.
  • Address Proof — Aadhaar Card, electricity bill, voter ID, ration card, or water bill. For rented accommodation, a rent agreement with a permanent address proof is acceptable.
  • For Secondary (Class 10) — self-certificate or Class 8th / 9th marksheet.
  • For Senior Secondary (Class 12) — original Class 10 marksheet issued by a recognised board.

Keep scanned copies ready before you open the portal — it does not save partial applications.

The NIOS Enrollment Process, Step by Step

1
Step 1
Choose Your Stream and Subjects

NIOS offers three streams at the secondary level (no stream selection needed — all students take a mix of subjects) and three streams at the senior secondary level: Academic, Science, and Vocational. For Class 10, students must choose a minimum of 5 subjects from the available list. For Class 12, students choose 5 subjects within their stream. Browse the NIOS subject list before you open the form so you know what your child wants to study — this decision happens early in the registration and you can’t easily change it later.

2
Step 2
Register on the NIOS Student Portal

Go to the official NIOS website (nios.ac.in) and click on “Online Admission” under the Student section. Select the correct academic session (April or October), then choose whether you’re enrolling for Secondary or Senior Secondary. Fill in your child’s personal details, contact information, and subject choices carefully. Double-check everything — especially the date of birth, as errors here cause problems later. Once submitted, you’ll receive a temporary enrollment number on your email.

3
Step 3
Upload Documents and Pay Fees

After registration, log back into the NIOS student portal using your temporary enrollment number. Upload the scanned documents — photograph, birth certificate, previous marksheet if applicable, and address proof. The system will verify your uploads and calculate your total fee based on the number of subjects.

Level Fee range Notes
Secondary (Class 10) ₹3,000 – ₹5,000 Varies by number of subjects; base govt. fee from approx. ₹2,340
Senior Secondary (Class 12) ₹4,500 – ₹12,000 Varies by subjects and exam options

Pay online through the portal and keep the payment receipt screenshot safely — you’ll need it if there is ever a discrepancy in your records.

4
Step 4
Select an Accredited Institution (AI) or Study Centre
💡
You do NOT need to physically attend any centre

This step confuses most parents during NIOS enrollment, so let me clarify. NIOS requires you to select an “Accredited Institution” from their list — this is just an administrative requirement. The AI you choose will receive your exam forms and distribute your hall tickets and study materials. Choose one that’s reasonably close to your location for convenience, but you won’t be attending classes there. If you’re homeschooling independently or using an online programme like OurSchoolHouse, you study at home — the AI is only a collection and exam centre.

5
Step 5
Receive Your Enrollment Confirmation

Within 2–4 weeks of completing payment, NIOS will email your final enrollment number and student identity card. This enrollment number is your permanent NIOS ID — save it. You’ll also receive login credentials to access your student dashboard where you can download study materials, check exam schedules, and apply for exams. NIOS study materials are available as free PDF downloads from the student portal, and physical books can be ordered for a small fee if you prefer printed copies.

What Happens After NIOS Enrollment?

Once enrolled, your child is officially a NIOS student — but enrollment alone doesn’t mean they’re registered for exams. NIOS runs exams twice a year (April/May and October/November), and you need to separately apply for exams through the student portal 2–3 months before the exam session. This two-step system gives you flexibility to study at your child’s pace. Some families complete Class 10 in one year, others take two or three — NIOS allows up to five years from the date of enrollment.

📅
Apply for Exams Separately
Submit your exam application 2–3 months before April/May or October/November sessions through the student portal.
📚
Download Study Materials
Free PDFs for every subject available immediately after enrollment. Physical books can be ordered for a small fee.
Study at Your Own Pace
Attempt each subject only when your child is ready. No penalty for taking longer — up to 5 years total.
📊
Track via Dashboard
Your student dashboard shows hall tickets, exam results, upcoming dates, and study material downloads.
⚠️
Enrollment and exam registration are two separate steps

Paying the enrollment fee does not automatically enter your child for exams. You must apply separately through the student portal 2–3 months before each exam session. Missing the exam application window means waiting for the next cycle.

“Enrollment is the beginning, not the destination — once you’re in, the flexibility of NIOS lets your child learn at the pace that actually suits them.”

Our Experience: Why We Chose NIOS for Homeschooling

I myself am a homeschooler who has been homeschooled throughout my life and I completed both my 10th and 12th — Secondary and Sr. Secondary — examinations through NIOS myself. Now an IITM Alumnus. We chose NIOS as it was the most direct and confident way to get my certifications and also be eligible for entrance examinations such as NEET or JEE. Originally planning to be a Veterinarian and hence planning to give NEET, this eligibility of the board for entrance exams was a very important aspect for me. Having gone through the whole process myself, I understood the nuances and confusions that a parent and a student might face. Also having the knowledge personally as a student, I worked with my team to start OurSchoolHouse — in order to make this knowledge available to everyone easily, remove any confusions one might face, and share my personal experiences throughout my NIOS journey to bolster everyone’s confidence as well.
